Using FTP

A common method of uploading files to your web hosting space on everyhost.com is to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol). It offers a basic approach to putting and getting files from your computer to your web hosting diskspace on our server.

  1. Obtaining FTP client software
  2. Using Max-FTP
    1. Logging in
    2. Preparing to transfer files
    3. Transferring files
    4. Aborting a transfer

Obtaining FTP client software

There are a variety of FTP clients available for every computing platform. Windows NT/2000 and UNIX often come prebundled with a basic FTP client; other platforms may require you to download an FTP client application. The tutorial below discusses using Max-FTP, a Freeware FTP client for Windows by NeoText Software. Other graphical FTP clients will likely behave in a similar fashion.

You may find many other FTP clients by searching Tucows for "FTP client". They have listings for Windows, Macintosh, Linux, OS/2, BeOS, and QNX as of this writing. Try to choose an FTP client labelled as "Freeware" instead of "Shareware" or "Demo", as the latter cases often require you to eventually purchase the software. An FTP client is relatively simple, and is generally not worth shelling out any money for.

Using Max-FTP

Logging in

Before you can begin transferring files, you'll need to log in. On one of the two sides of the application (it doesn't matter which one), enter everyhost.com into the Address: field, and press Enter. (If you have a personal domain name, you may use it lieu of everyhost.com here as well.)

You'll be prompted for your name and password. Don't check the Use Anonymous Settings box. After a brief authentication scheme, you should see the files located in your diskspace on our server.

Preparing to transfer files

To begin uploading files, you should choose the directory on your computer where the files currently live on the side opposite to the one you logged in on. You can click on the folder icon next to the Address: field to select a folder. I had some trouble getting the files to appear initially, although clicking in the Address: field and hitting Enter seemed to do the trick eventually.

Once you have a list of files on your computer on one side, and a list of your current files on everyhost.com on the other side, you are ready to begin transferring files!

Transferring files

To transfer a file from one machine to the other, simply move your mouse pointer to the file you want to transfer, hold down the left mouse-button, and while holding the button, drag the file to the other side of the application. The application will ask you if this is a cut or a copy. Select Cut if you want to delete the file from where you are moving it from after the transfer. In general, Copy is a better choice here.

After you perform that, the application will work on transferring the file. Depending on the size of your file, and the speed of your connection, this may be a matter of seconds or minutes. You should see a progress meter along the bottom letting you know how far along the process is.

Aborting a transfer

If you need to abort the transfer in progress for any reason, you can do so by selecting File > Stop from the dropdown menus on top.
